Adenosine Stress Tests

Mode of action -  Adenosine dialates the blood vessels leading to the heart stimulating exersize.

Side effects of Adenosine

Facial flushing, palpitations, chest pain and hypotension tachyarrhythmias and bradyarrhythmias may occur. Shortness of breath occurs in 25 up to over 50% of patients studied.

Cardiac side effects include:
arrhythmias (most commonly ventricular extrasystoles), transient atrioventricular nodal block of differing degrees. Hypotension is frequently recorded

Meds that a doctor may withhold before the test

  • Isosorbide dinitrate (for example: Dilatrate, Isordil)
  • Isosorbide mononitrate (for example: Imdur, ISMO, Monoket)
  • Nitroglycerin (for example: Minitran, Nitropatches, Nitrostat)
  • Dipyridamole (Persantine) -- Stop taking 48 hours before the test
