In the July 10,2008 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine a study of treatment options for acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema found that
NIPPV induces a more rapid improvement in respiratory distress and metabolic disturbance than O2
NIPPV impoved dyspnea in 1 hr as well as heart rate, acidosis and hypercapnea
There was no significant difference between CPAP and NIPPV in the combined death orintubation in 7 days.
